Mary Evelyn Calvert

October 12, 1935 – April 4, 2020

Mary Evelyn Calvert, age 84, of Sheridan (Terhune) Indiana, passed away on Saturday morning, April 4, 2020 at Brookdale Senior Living in Carmel, Indiana. Born in Lebanon, Indiana on October 12, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Henry Clifford and Florence Mable (Demaree) Johns. On August 28, 1953, Mary married the love of her life, Doran Clay Calvert.  Mary was a member of Terhune United Methodist Church for over 65 years, and a member of Ellenton United Methodist Church in Florida for over 10 years. She was a church pianist, Sunday school teacher, and vacation bible school teacher at Terhune UMC; she also was a member of the church choir, and a member of the Jamboree Quartet at Ellenton UMC. Mary and Doran owned the old general store in Terhune, Indiana under the proprietary name of Johns & Calvert. They purchased the business from Mary’s late parents Hank & Florence Johns in the early 1970’s, at which time Mary assumed responsibility of business management. Her parents had owned and operated the general store since the late 1920’s. The store closed in 1999, when both Mary and Doran retired. Mary loved playing the piano/organ and singing. She was a former member of Sweet Adeline’s. She was also a member of Boone County Home Economics and Job’s Daughters. She is a graduate of Sheridan High School class of 1953. She enjoyed sewing and was an extremely accomplished seamstress, often found shopping for patterns or sewing clothes for each and every family member. When she wasn’t sewing or busy cooking family meals, washing clothes, or cleaning house, you might find her in the kitchen giving family haircuts. Gardening was another one of her passions, and the fruits of her labor through canning and freezing were enjoyed by both family and friends. Crossword puzzles and reading novels were her getaway when it was time to relax. Once a month, since graduating high school, she enjoyed hosting or attending card club with her closest high school friends (Jim & Sue Mossburg, Don & Alice Lecklitner, and/or Jim & Ilene Mossburg) for an evening of euchre…and lots of fun, food, and laughter. She was an extremely hard working and busy woman. Most of all, Mary was a loving and dedicated wife, wonderful mother, and grateful grandmother and great grandmother dedicated in love and service to her family. Above all else, Mary was a kind and gentle soul who dedicated her life to God; poured her heart into parenting her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and served her community to the best of her ability every chance she had. Mary is survived by her husband of 66 years, Doran Calvert; sons: Gary Neil and David Bruce Calvert, daughter: Susan Diane Rawlings (Randy); bothers: Donald and Robert Johns; bonus sister and brother:  Myrna Demaree Rodriguez, Ronald Demaree; grandchildren: Raina (Jason) Cox, Danielle Calvert, Andrew (Ashley) Calvert, Jeffrey (Brittany) Rawlings, Jennifer (Joe) Godar, Dawson Calvert; great grandchildren: Rionna Cox, Jada Cox, Sophia Cox, Cole Rawlings, Hallee Rawlings, Lettie Rawlings, Evelyn Godar, Avery Calvert, Amelia Calvert.  Mary is preceded in death only by her parents: Henry & Florence Johns, and bonus brother: Jack Demaree. A private family graveside service will be held at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan, Indiana.  A celebration of Mary’s life will be planned for a later date. All are encouraged to leave a condolence or to sign Mary’s guest book at fisherfunerals.com. Fisher Family Funeral Services is honored to serve the Calvert Family.

I’m so sadden to hear. Mary, Doren and the Terhune Grocery Store was a huge part of my life growing up. My brothers, sisters and I loved walking to the store to buy ice cream, candy and other treats in the summers. I remember so well walking into the store and was always greeted with a big, kind smile from Mary and her Mother, Mrs. Johns. They were both very sweet ladies. She was always beautiful inside and out! Thank you for being a happy time in my life, Mary!❤️ Condolences to all of the Calvert family!

To Uncle Doran, Gary, David, Susan and your families, Carol and I extend our deepest sympathy. You all are in our thoughts. I have many fond memories of Aunt Mary; playing the piano, leading those that wanted to sing at our family reunions, baking yummy stuff and working at the store. May she Rest In Peace.

Dave and I wish to send our condolences to Mary's family. We spend our winters in Tidevue in Ellenton, Florida where we met Mary and Dorn, Cleora and Danny and Joan and Dorsey. Wonderful people! We always saw them at breakfast and other activities. They were all neighbors of my mom and dad, Virginia and Dick Koehn and sister Cindy Koehn. It was always fun to get together with the Calvert crew! We will miss Mary.
